Ensuring our clients are provided with an environmentally responsible joinery products is all part of our service. At Bodnant Estate Joinery we fully appreciate the need for sustainable sources of materials, and that we play our part in ensuring that this is possible now and in the future.
The forestry on the Bodnant Estate is predominantly Welsh oak. The forestry management programme which includes felling and milling the Estate’s own timber, helps reduces transport costs and maximises the use of local resources.
All timber products used in our joinery manufacture process and throughout our supply chain are FSC certified or from the Bodnant Estate and felled as part of the Better Woodland for Wales (BWW) forestry plan.
No part of the tree goes unused at Bodnant Estate Joinery either, even branches that are stripped off go to the workshops wood burner to produce energy and heat and the sawdust, collected via our dust extraction system goes locally for animal bedding.
Timber is adaptable, repairable, durable and versatile. It is visually attractive and warm to the touch. Wood offers a multitude of beautiful textures, colours, pattern, properties and strengths, and it can be finished in a variety of ways including polishing, oiling, varnishing and painting- all done onsite in our paint and glaze workshops.
Restoration of Period Properties
Timber is suitable for the sympathetic restoration of period properties particularly when planning controls often restrict the use of u-PVC windows in conservation areas and in buildings of historical interest.
A single tree trunk will yield several different grades of timber, from lower grades with natural characteristics such as knots, to higher grade heartwood.
Unlike steel or plastic, timber requires only a relatively small amount of energy to convert it into useful products. A u-PVC window frame has more than seven times the energy input in manufacture than a wooden window of similar size and design.
Wood can be also recycled in a variety of ways or, as being a natural product, will eventually rot at the end of its useful life.
When purchased from well managed sources, wood is a sustainable, environmentally friendly resource.
Recycled timber can be used in manufactured panels such as chipboard. As a building material, wood is predictable in fires and has excellent heat and sound insulation properties.
According to the Timber Trade Federation (TTF), using timber helps buyers and specifiers meet their sustainability objectives; mitigating climate change, reducing carbon footprint whilst gaining credits under schemes such as BREEAM and the Code for Sustainable Homes.
Wood is a naturally beautiful product, with a proven track record and it is well tested that good quality joinery will last a lifetime, if treated sympathetically.
