HERITAGE & CONSERVATION
The forestry on the Bodnant Estate is predominantly Welsh oak, the forestry management programme, which includes felling and milling the Estate’s own timber, helps reduces transport costs and maximises the use of local resources.
All timber products used in our joinery manufacture process and throughout our supply chain are FSC certified or from the Bodnant Estate and felled as part of the Better Woodland for Wales (BWW) forestry plan.
No part of the tree goes unused at Bodnant Estate Joinery, even branches that are stripped off go to the workshops wood burner to produce energy and heat, and the sawdust collected via our dust extraction system goes locally for animal bedding.
Kind to the Environment
Using sustainable materials is only part of our environmental policy, we also reduce waste through our design process, as works are designed via our in-house resource.
Trees absorb carbon dioxide and emit oxygen. Managed felling and replanting can increase this effect since young and growing trees absorb and emit more than older more mature trees.
Heritage is also an area we are particularly skilled in having carried out work for the National Trust, CADW funded projects and other conservation architecture projects. Bodnant Estate Joinery has for a many years carried out bespoke handmade joinery work to many properties including Listed Buildings, in addition to sensitive reproduction works of period craftsmanship in wood and working with conservation architects. This has also included the emulation of period work for the National Trust.
This type of work is both challenging and interesting for our skilled team, as accepting commissions for what are often works of art is a project that is relished enthusiastically by our bench joiners whose craft expertise rises to the task of creating a timeless example of period woodworking. Of course, some examples of conservation work are less complex, but even these need to replicate the original, accurately reflecting the period of originality and maintaining the historical style and character. On some projects it is a combination of balancing reproduction with modern enhancement in order to ensure longevity or less maintenance.
